Building houses can sometimes be akin to building a box, unless its Erwin van der Weerd’s company, Perfect Places. He says that he developed the business based on the idea of thinking outside the box and coming at it from a completely different angle – this angle was to develop a modular building system, using his own experiences and advice from a senior engineer.Erwin says that Perfect Places offers three levels of housing types. There is GAP housing, middle and high-end market housing and DIY housing, where people buy a building package. His company can run a project from A to Z, taking it from design to finished product. Alternatively, he says, they take a design from the clients’ architect and turn it into a modular design. The business is currently also developing a new roofing product in conjunction with the CSIR, and also works as consultants with client and architects to advise on other sustainable or eco-friendly products that can be used in the development. He says that he is passionate about the modular building industry because it works, delivering a sustainable, comfortable and healthy living space. The client gets a better end product that is safe, reduces monthly energy and water bills, and is more comfortable due to a consistent temperature within the house - and all at a price similar to a traditional brick and mortar house.Erwin says that while the business is strong, to take it to the next level he requires a decent capital injection or loan, mostly to enable Perfect Places to be able to tackle bigger projects and to develop new products.
