When is the tracking of people and assets not something straight out of a James Bond movie? When it’s a service provided by Ian Duvenhage’s company, ManMakeMachine (M3), a business he launched based on the core belief that this country has the talent and creativity to develop leading edge technology solutions in Africa, for Africa. “M3 provides solutions for the tracking of assets, for the purpose of theft prevention and security, and of people as well, for reasons of security and safety. For example, being able to track someone working in a mine offers enormous health and safety benefits. Our clients are mostly in the manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and mining industries,” states Ian. He points out that the market for connected devices and industry-focused Internet of things (IoT) solutions is poised to explode – it is predicted that the SA IoT market size will expand from $5billion in 2015 to $18 billion by 2020. “Understanding this, M3 focuses on building technology that will be able to shift industries and fundamentally changes companies and their use of resources, using solutions developed by local engineering talent and designed for the local market conditions and context.” He suggests that the next step for M3 is to grow its core engineering team to rapidly scale new solutions and to set up international sales channels, so that the business can ultimately become a globally-recognised player in the industry-focused IoT solutions space.
