2 Oceans Maritime Academy

Sometimes, the best way to get ahead in life is to combine your career with your passion. In a way, that’s exactly what former teacher Sean Cumming did when launching 2 Oceans Maritime Academy. Having always had a passion for sailing, Sean decided to start offering sail training courses, thereby combining his teaching background with his deep love of the sport of sailing. “Being in the industry made me realise there was a gap in the market for a really professional offering that presented school leavers with a viable career path in the maritime sector. It also made me realise how many people considered sailing to be an adventure, and I wanted to give them access to a safe life-experience,” he says. Sean believes that the training offered by 2 Oceans Maritime Academy can provide professional career opportunities for previously disadvantaged youths. This aligns with the government's vision regarding job creation in the maritime sector, specifically in the oil and gas industry. In addition, he says, thanks to the weaker rand, it is also cheaper for foreign clients to qualify or upgrade their qualifications in SA, as we offer the same Royal Yachting Association (RYA) courses. For his next step, Sean says he wants to develop a Cadet Ship Training Programme for previously disadvantaged youths. “I am also seeking to open new adventure sailing routes in the Southern Atlantic and Southern Indian Ocean, as well as to continue building my international customer base. Ultimately, I want to play a role in putting Cape Town on the international map as a maritime training hub, with my business, naturally, at the centre of it all.”
