Making the most of your talent Contrary to popular belief, talent is not just something that lucky individuals are born with – it is something that can be taught, nurtured and managed. At least, that is the view of Riëtte Reid, who formed Competence SA to help overcome the perceived talent and leadership scarcity in the country, by contributing towards identifying, developing and enabling competence in South Africa. Riëtte’s business provides services to companies of all sizes, from SMEs to large corporates. These services include HR outsourcing to enable businesses to make optimal use of their employee potential, talent management consulting, psychometric assessments, coaching and leadership development interventions and change management consulting. She suggests that, unlike most of her competitors, Competence SA has the upper hand because it offers the full spectrum of talent management consulting, and does so in an integrated manner. For example, the business provides recruitment and selection, performance and reward management, training and development solutions and even career and succession management. Riëtte adds that the best and most effective differentiator any business can have lies in having the right people and managing them effectively. Business owners, she says, are often experts in a specific field and prefer to stick to that, rather than managing people, which is where her company comes in, as it can put a good foundation in place to make the management of people as painless as possible. Asked what she sees as her final destination, Riëtte says that by continuing to help businesses to identify the relative strengths as well as gaps in their HR practices and offering them customisable solutions, she aims for her business to be recognised as the preferred provider of HR/talent management services in the Western Cape, and by 2020, in the country.
